From workouts to healthy diets, many of us make an effort to look after ourselves. However, we could be compromising our health on a daily basis without even knowing it. From carrying heavy handbags to wearing crippling heels, here are the top 10 female habits you should try to break.

Wearing heels

More and more of us are opting to wear heels on a daily basis, and this could be bad news for our health. High heels affect our posture, put pressure on joints, and can lead to a range of conditions including arthritis, hammer toes, back pain and tendon injuries – and that’s before you take into account any heel-related accidents! To minimize damage, limit your heels to 1.5 inches for daily wear, and wear insoles to help reduce the pressure on joints.

Carrying a heavy handbag

With the rising number of gadgets and accessories the majority of women haul around, many of us are carrying around several pounds of weight on our shoulders every day. As a result, lots of us are also putting our long term health at risk. While you may not feel the effects right now, lugging around a heavy handbag can lead to serious back problems and neck pain as well as poor posture. Don’t wait until the damage is done – do your health a favour and try clearing out all non-essential items and switching to a smaller bag.

Sleeping in make-up

Most of us have succumbed to the temptation to sleep in our post-party makeup at some point. However, leaving makeup on overnight – along with the dirt and oil that naturally accumulates on skin throughout the day –is a quick route to clogged pores, congested skin and spots. Sleeping with mascara and eye makeup on can also affect your health by causing eye irritation, bloodshot eyes or even infection.

Matching men drink for drink

From networking drinks to first dates and social events, there are many instances when women may feel compelled to keep up with the drinking habits of the opposite sex. However, women not only tend to weigh less than men but they have less body water to dilute the alcohol, which means they tend to get more drunk more quickly. To minimize the risks of alcohol on your health, try to keep within the recommended guidelines for alcohol consumption and alternate alcohol with soft drinks.

Wearing the wrong bra size

It is thought that more than 70 per cent of women are wearing the wrong bra size. However, wearing a badly fitted bra can not only affect the look of your clothes, but research suggests it can cause a range of health problems including back, neck and breast pain, breathing difficulties, poor posture, skin irritation, circulation problems and even irritable bowel syndrome. Rather than guessing your size, make sure you get measured to ensure you are getting the support you need.

Worrying and harboring regrets

Stress is damaging to both our physical and mental health, and women are twice as likely as men to suffer from stress-related disorders, as well as having higher rates of depression and anxiety. While it is thought there may be biological reasons for this, worrying about the future and dwelling on regrets can also add to our problems, with research suggesting that women are more than twice as likely as men to harbor regrets over lost loves and broken relationships.

Obsessing over appearance

While both genders suffer from body insecurity, many women tend to overly obsess over their idea of the “perfect” body. Research findings published in the journal Obstetrics & Gynecology found that 16 per cent of the normal or underweight women studied believed themselves to be overweight, while a study commissioned by Dove found that 90 per of women wanted to change at least one aspect of their appearance. Body insecurity not only affects our mental health, but it can also lead to physical damage caused by extreme diets, yo-yo dieting, eating disorders and cosmetic surgery.

Emotional eating

While comfort eating affects both genders, research has suggested that men are more likely to reinforce positive emotions with food, while women comfort eat when they’re sad. Women are also more likely to satisfy their cravings with sweet, high calorie foods. Rather than letting your waistline suffer next time you’re feeling blue, try distracting yourself from cravings by doing something you enjoy, or boost your endorphins and health with an uplifting workout.

Not getting enough sleep

Not only can lack of sleep make us look and feel at our worst, but insufficient shut-eye can also lead to increased accidents, calorie consumption and heart disease risk. Unluckily for women, statistics suggest that sleep problems affect more women than men, while a study by the University of Michigan found that women are more than twice as likely to give up sleep to care for others. Unfortunately, sleep has been found to affect women’s blood pressure and mood more than men’s, making it imperative that you do your best to get a good night’s sleep.

Putting themselves last

Not only are women more likely to compromise their sleeping habits to care for children and others, they are also prone to putting their own wants and needs at the bottom of a hectic to-do list of chores and obligations. To avoid running yourself into the ground, learn to sometimes say no to those requests and commitments that are less than essential, and make sure you set aside some “me” time each week to do something enjoyable just for you.

What season would those belly fat-buster programs rake in the most money? You guessed it Summer. While some people are getting ready to flaunt their sculpted abs and shopping for beach outfits, most people are just desperate to know the fastest way to lose belly fat. But is there really such a thing? Getting rid of inches in your stomach and losing belly fat are really some of the most difficult tasks ever.

However, there are some fast and effective ways to lose belly fat. Remember, there are no magic pills or secret exercise that will magically make those extra flab disappear. Like everything else in the world, it takes work. If you put in effort consistently, you will see results in no time.

Best and Easiest Ways to Lose Belly Fat at Home

There are much more simple, less invasive, measures of losing belly fat at home.

1.Never Skip Breakfast

If you don’t eat after many hours of sleeping your body goes into “˜starvation mode’. This is bad news for shedding belly fat as it slows your metabolism down in an effort to save energy and burn less calories. In fact a lot of dietitians advice that the best breakfast is a heavy one.

2. Start Jogging

Jogging is a great way to tone up the body and lose some extra fat as well, especially in the belly area. When done correctly, jogging gets the heart rate elevated enough and for a long enough period of time that it begins to burn fat all over the body. Many people who take up jogging find that they can boost their own metabolism and build a stronger, healthier heart at the same time.

3. Change Your Snacking Habits

Losing belly fat is not about depriving yourself. It is about changing things so that you are in a healthier state of mind and body. Snacking is one thing that doesn’t have to stop but must change. If you currently eat lots of chips and candy at work, take some fruit and crackers instead. It satisfies the same sugar and salt cravings but at a fraction of the calories and fat. Vegetables and nuts are also great snacks. Carry healthy snacks with you all the time to avoid the urge to hit the vending machine when that post-lunch hunger pang strikes.

4. Get a Hobby

If you find yourself sitting around a lot, consider an extracurricular activity that you could take up as a way to get more active. Biking, hiking, volunteering – anything that gets the body moving and up out of that chair can help you to burn that belly flab. Combined with other common-sense lifestyle changes such as incorporating diet and exercise, being more active is an important part of building a healthier body.

5. Drink More Water

The average person doesn’t drink enough water. Soda and juice may actually contribute to the belly fat problem, while water helps the body to shed weight naturally. It can also help keep the body hydrated for exercise and take up space in the stomach, helping you to feel fuller and less likely to snack.

6. Eat Slowly

Get into the habit of taking smaller bites and chewing them slowly. By doing this you will avoid overeating and bloating.

7. Treat Yourself

While cakes and cookies are not part of a healthy belly fat-free diet, consider treating yourself once a week. This can eliminate the splurging that so many dieters succumb to as they attempt to quit their favorite foods cold turkey. Every Friday, treat yourself to a nice drink or slice of cake as a reward for being so diligent in your attempts to lose belly fat.

8. Avoiding Junk Foods

This may be hard for you, as many of you may be avid lovers of junk food. However, knowing that simply avoiding it is one of the fastest way to lose belly fat could definitely make this task so much easier. We know how difficult this this can be. But you need to accept that eating junk food is one of the reasons – probably THE primary reason – that you have developed belly fat. Ever wonder why you just can’t help but to eat more even if your mind is telling you to stop? That’s because junk food increases your appetite level and causes you to eat more. And, the more junk food you eat, the bigger your belly would actually get. It’s an endless negative cycle, one that you definitely want to avoid.

Is it when your odds to conceive are at the strongest, or is it when you’ve matured enough to be able to take a proper care of your baby?

And while it’s up to a person to choose, there are statistics and science nobody could rebuff of
Age and Fertility

Biologically, we are more fertile during a certain timeframe. Right time to conceive begins as we turn 18 and extends into 20s. With early 30s approaching, our reproductive abilities start declining gradually. However, it’s not before reaching the age of 35 when fertility can become a problem. Towards 40s, women are more likely to encounter more difficulties getting pregnant. While the nature signals the best time for pregnancy is reaching 20s, social realities weigh in and 20s just seem not that right for many young moms.

Why Old Age Pregnancy

Today’s women tend to miss fertile 20s as they are busy with starting a career, figuring out an advanced education, or even both. Having a baby in 20s may be very challenging financially, without job security and all. Let’s face it, having a baby requires not only parental love, it also needs sound household budget.

Early pregnancy may be hard on a relationship, too. Younger moms simply don’t have enough life experience to deal with baby-related stresses while fathers may feel alienated as they see their wives suddenly preoccupied with a child. This transition period would take a lot of tolerance to come through and emerge stronger as a family. Unfortunately, many marriages don’t pass the test.

Form this perspective, matured couples would have fewer problems having a baby. They gain more experience with age and are more ready to make sacrifices which parenthood requires. Maturity also matters when it comes down to weathering the trauma of pregnancy and labor. Older women are more likely to be easier with the problem of pregnancy pounds and other post-pregnancy issues.

Pregnancy Complications

But as we proceed with our careers, reproductive time’s ticking away. Now as you’ve crossed the age of 30, it might take a bit harder to conceive. Of course, turning 30 doesn’t mean at all you are getting irretrievably infertile. And the study of the University of Texas at Austin just backs up the assumption. According to scientists, the best time to get on a journey into motherhood is 34. At this point a woman is quite healthy to have a baby and achieves financial stability.

However, beyond this line, pregnancy complications can be piling up. Another study conducted by Human Fertilization and Embryology Authority, UK, showed a steady rise of fertility treatments among women over 35. More and more babies are born as a result of IVF treatment with higher risk of birth defects. So older age pregnancy doesn’t seem like a totally safe haven. Obviously, as we get older, our health weakens. Many women over 35 are very likely to develop diabetes or high blood pressure, making it tougher to carry and deliver a healthy baby.

Pregnancy is a milestone event whatever time it happens. So, what time seems best to you?

Being pregnant, and a teenager, doesn’t mean eliminating your favorite foods from your diet. However, pregnancy does mean that you are providing nutrition for two. Both you and your baby are dependent on what you put in your mouth for nutrition. By learning to make healthy food choices you can increase your baby’s chance of being born healthy.

1. Most teens eat lots of sandwiches and hamburgers. Be sure to put lettuce, tomatoes, and other sliced veggies – the more the better – on your sandwiches and burgers when you are pregnant to increase the nutritional value of your meal.

2. If you are trapped in a “white bread world,” pregnancy is a good time to learn to use only whole-grain breads and rolls.

3. Pizza is not always an unhealthy choice for pregnant teens. Make your pizza healthier by adding lots of vegetables and extra cheese instead of fat-laden meats such as pepperoni and sausage.

4. Fruit juices and milk are an especially important component of a pregnant teen’s diet. Sodas and coffee consumption should be minimal during pregnancy.

5. Eat lots of fresh veggies and fruit when you are pregnant. Just don’t try to make them “tastier” by adding additional fat such as butter, creams, or sauces.

6. Always a good idea for reducing fat and particularly important for pregnant teens is to prepare meats by baking, broiling, or grilling instead of frying.

7. Calcium is vital for the healthy development of your baby and the health of your own growing bones and teeth. Instead of eating ice cream when you are pregnant, try eating more low-fat yogurt and cottage cheese.

8. Baked potatoes without butter or sour cream are a far healthier choice during pregnancy, or anytime, than french fries.

9. Instead of eating candy bars or cookies for snacks, try eating fresh dried fruits or raw veggies.

10. Everyone loves desserts, but traditional desserts such as pies, cakes, and cookies are not a healthy choice for pregnancy. Make dessert time a healthy choice by choosing fresh fruit or yogurt next time.

Bra burning may have been a sign of the coming of age of female emancipation; and in fact many women may be happiest in no bra at all, the fact is that for many women, going braless is most uncomfortable.

For those women, who would not dream of venturing out without this item of intimate clothing, what is important is to have a well fitting bra that is the correct size and to recognize what the right size for chest measurements is. You can tell that you are wearing the wrong size of bra if:

• There is an ‘overflow’. If there are portions of the breasts that do not fit right into the cups and spill over at the top or near the underarm area, then bra is too small.

• If the back of the bra rides up. Ideally the back of the bra should remain parallel to the front base of the bra, if the back rides up, then either the straps are too short/tight or the bra has lost a lot of its elasticity and is not staying put in the position it is meant to be in.

• If you have never been professionally measured. Research has shown that between 60 and 80% of women wear the wrong size bra, and if you have never been measured, chances are that you wear the wrong size!

• If you have been wearing the same size bra for ever. It is important to acknowledge that age, childbirth and breast feeding will all take a toll on the breasts, their size cannot remain the same forever.

• If the cups are wrinkly. This would mean that you need smaller cups.

Food Freshness:

Baked Goods:

To keep cakes, cupcakes, doughnuts, or any bread/bakery products fresher longer, put a small glass/bowl of water in the box and close the lid. The water keeps the items moist, so that they are not “crunchy”.

Bread:

Put your bread in the fridge and it will keep fresh well past the date.

Brown Sugar:

Put a piece of bread in brown sugar to keep it soft.

Butter:

If you “stock up” on butter, keep the excess in the freezer and it will keep longer.

Celery:

Before putting in refrigerator, wrap celery in aluminum foil and it will keep for weeks.

Cereal:

If you usually have several boxes of cereal opened at one time. The best way to keep them fresh is to roll the bag down several times and then pinch it closed with a pinch clothespin. They come in wood or plastic and in many colors.

Champagne:

To keep champagne bubbly after opening and serving the first glass, place a spoon handle, or a fork handle, whichever fits into neck of bottle and your champagne will remain bubbly even until the next morning to serve at breakfast. It Works!

Chilies:

To keep green chillies fresh, take off the stem, wrap them in a paper towel and keep it in a ziploc bag. I have had chillies stay fresh for over a month.

Cookies:

Place a slice of bread in with your fresh baked cookies, or even after they’ve gotten a little harder than you appreciate. It will keep the cookies soft or soften them up.

Cottage Cheese:

To keep the unused portion of cottage cheese from becoming “soupy”, replace the lid tightly and store UPSIDE DOWN in your refrigerator.

Crackers:

Store an open sleeve of crackers in an empty Pringles can to keep them fresh longer.

Crackers:

Put them on a cookie sheet and bake at 200 degrees for about 15 – 20 minutes. They will be fresh again.

Cucumbers:

To keep cucumbers as fresh and firm as the day you bought them, simply wrap each one in a paper towel and store them as usual in your vegetable crisper. I have had them last at least 3 weeks!

Everything:

How to make just about everything in the refrigerator stay fresh longer. After it is opened just store it upside down. I have tested this with Milk, Sour Cream, Dip, Applesauce, Jelly, Jam, Pickles, Peppers and more. If you can’t store it upside down “milk for instance” store it on it’s side just make sure that the liquid covers the cap. When storing anything upside down try to make sure that the contents sink to the “Top” to create a “seal”. The reason this works is bacteria needs to “land” on food and needs air to grow. This method stops both.

Frozen Goods:

Put an ice chest with some ice in your car the next time you go grocery shopping, and ask the bag boy to put all the cold & frozen items together in the bags, so you can fit them in the ice chest for the ride home, especially in hot weather. The food will keep much longer without having been subjected to the heat, even for a few minutes.

General:

I use the packages of clothes pins you can buy for a dollar or two to use to close bags of chips, cereal, bread, left over cake mix and multiple other things.

Grapes:

Wash and clean white or red grapes. Put in freezer storing in ziploc bags. When the urge for something sweet hits you, help yourself to this great healthy snack!

Fruit Salad:

Sprinkle fruit salad with lemon juice, pineapple juice or plain pineapple to prevent it from turning brown.

Lettuce:

To keep a head of lettuce fresh, completely wrap it in a paper towel and put it in a zip lock bag. I have had lettuce last over a month!

Potato Chips:

If you have a bunch of potato chip bags open simply roll them up and throw them in the freezer. This will keep them fresh a lot longer.

Mushrooms:

To keep mushrooms from spoiling quickly, keep them in the carton and cover with plastic film wrap. Puncture the plastic wrap with a fork about five times. Refrigerate.

Mushrooms will stay fresher and slime-free longer if you store them loosely in a brown paper bag (lunch bag type) in the refrigerator.

Onions:

Got leftover onions (or any similar vegetable)? Just chop them up in the food processor, then freeze in ice cube trays. After frozen, dump the frozen veggies into a freeze-safe plastic bag. Now you can easily use the “ice cubes” for cooking or adding to recipes; and the good part is you don’t have to chop anything up and you can use only the amount you need.

Potatoes:

Put an apple (any kind) in your store bought potatoes bag. The apple will keep them from sprouting.

Salt and Sugar:

To help keep your salt and sugar from getting moist and clumping, place a saltine cracker in the container with it. The cracker soaks up all the moisture and your salt and sugar will stay fresher, longer!

Strawberries:

To keep strawberries fresh, store unwashed berries, stems on in a closed jar. Wash and stem when ready to eat. Will keep up to a week.

Vidalia Onions:

If you want to keep vidallia onions throughout the winter, put them in a knee high panty hose & place them in the bottom vegetable tray in your Frig. Its works!!!

Vegetables (General):

Wash vegetables such as lettuce, carrots or peeled onions, let them dry and place in a sealed zip-lock bag with a dry clean paper towel. They last until all is used with no discolored leaves or bad spots.

I have found that fresh veggies keep for a very long time in the Tupperware “fridgesmart” containers….I have had mushrooms last for 3 weeks and grapes to last over a month!

As a woman, your body is very complex. Throughout every phase of your life you will require extra care and nutritional support. Today’s scientific advances support a number of natural choices for women, like soy. Still, the fact remains that calcium, folic acid and iron continue to be the most important nutrients that can impact a woman’s total health. All women should take a daily multiple vitamins with these essential nutrients.

Calcium is essential to strong healthy bones:

As a woman you have a much greater risk of developing osteoporosis because you have less bone tissue and lose bone more rapidly then men do. Be sure to consume adequate calcium throughout life, as this may reduce your risk of osteoporosis later in life. Calcium is essential to the health of bones, teeth and skin, yet few adults get enough of it in their diets. Make sure you find a high quality calcium supplement to ensure you receive a health-enhancing daily allowance.

Folic acid impacts women in many ways:

It plays an important role during rapid fetal growth and development. In fact, adequate intake of folic acid as part of a healthy diet before and in early pregnancy may reduce the risk of having a baby with a birth defect of the brain or spinal cord. All women of childbearing age are recommended to consume 400 mcg of folic acid everyday starting at least one month before conception into the early weeks of pregnancy.

Folic acid also plays a role in the maintenance of normal homocysteine levels; elevated levels of homocysteine are believed to be a risk factor of heart health.

Iron:

Iron is a vital nutrient that plays an essential role in forming healthy red blood cells and transporting oxygen. It’s estimated that as many as 62% of women over the age of 20 are not meeting the RDA for iron. Women also tend to be low in iron because they tend to eat foods low in iron and lose iron through menstruation.

Vitamin C:

Drinking a glass of orange juice with your cereal can boost iron absorption by the body. Vitamin C helps the body metabolize the iron. A high quality Vitamin C supplement rich in antioxidants to help fight the harmful effects of free radicals is a wonderful supplement not only to assist iron absorption, but also to combat ageing. Vitamin C is coveted for its many benefits, including a contribution to healthy bones, teeth, blood vessels and the production of collagen.

In addition to taking a daily multiple vitamin, routine exams are key to prevention and healthy living. You should have a yearly gynecological exam that includes a pelvic exam, breast exam and PAP test. Also, consider performing monthly self-breast exams to familiarize yourself with how your breasts normally look and feel. If you are over 40, you should have a mammogram every year.

Doctors suggest these exams because they say when women regularly examine the area, they become more aware of what’s normal and what’s new. Any changes (masses, lumps, appearance) are often easily detected by women who do monthly self breast exams. Detecting these changes is important, as changes can be early signs of cancer. It’s important to say, most of the time changes don’t necessarily mean you have cancer. But, all changes should be reported promptly to your doctor.

When should you perform self breast exams?
It’s a good idea to perform your self breast exams at the same time each month. Some women go through the routine the week after their period, when their breast area is not swollen or tender. Those who no longer have periods can set a date, such as the 1st of the month and do the examination every month on that particular date.

How to do a self breast check:
Stand in front of a mirror (shirtless/braless) with your arms at your sides. Look at your chest to see if any changes should be noted. Then, stand with your hands on your hips and look for changes. Lastly, raise your arms and flex your chest muscles, looking for changes.

Check out the appearance of your breasts, looking for changes in contour, swelling, dimpling of the skin and the nipple. Most women don’t have “matching breasts” and will notice changes from one to the other. But, you will know what’s normal for you and what’s not.

Use the pads of your fingertips to firmly (no pain should occur) on your breast area. Check your entire breast and armpit. You can use a circular motion, an up-and-down motion or a wedge pattern motion. Whatever motion you choose, be sure to use the same one each month on both breasts. Use whichever one is easiest for you to remember.

Lay down and start with the right breast. Put a pillow under your right shoulder and place your right hand under your head. Do the same fingers motion and procedure on the breast again, which you did standing up. Repeat for the left breast, checking all tissue during the screening.

In a gentle way, squeeze each nipple and report any discharge which may occur immediately to your doctor.

It’s important to see your doctor for exams each year and follow their recommendations on getting a mammogram to check the breast area and lymph node areas.

I’ve never been what one would call well endowed, but when I was in my 20s, my 34Bs sat regally on my chest. With the right bra I could even create cleavage. By my 30s not only had my boobs shrunk, they appeared to be sacked out on my rib cage, as if in need of a long rest.

It happens to the best of busts. “Most women start to get saggier in their 30s, because as you get older your skin loses elasticity and stretches because of gravity,” says Loren Eskenazi, a San Francisco plastic surgeon. “And pregnancy and breast-feeding accelerate the process.”

Why is childbearing so cruel to your curves? When you’re pregnant, your breasts get bigger, as their ducts enlarge and their tissue swells in preparation for breast-feeding. The months-long stretch-o-thon of pregnancy and nursing can leave them slack. In addition, the ducts and fat in your breasts sometimes shrink a bit after you have a baby, leaving your breasts less dense and full. While nothing short of surgery will make your boobs look like they did when you were 21, there are less invasive options that can make a difference. Here’s the ultimate guide to beautiful breasts at any age.

“I must, I must, I must increase my bust!”

Okay, so exercise won’t increase your cup size. But it is a natural way to make your breasts sit higher and more even on your chest.”Exercise builds the muscles of the chest wall, so your breasts will look less droopy,” says Mindy Mylrea, a fitness instructor in Santa Cruz, California. “If you strengthen your back muscles, too, you can improve your posture, which can make your chest look a hundred times better.” Try to do the following moves every other day

The push-up: Assume the women’s push-up position — on your hands and knees on the floor with your back flat, like a plank of wood. To target the correct muscles (your chest-wall muscles), place your hands on the floor in line with your bust, not with your shoulders. Keeping abdominal muscles tight and back straight, bend your arms and lower your torso toward the floor until your chest almost touches it, then push yourself back up to the starting position. Work your way up to three sets of 10 repetitions. After you’ve built up strength, increase the benefits by putting your toes instead of your knees on the floor.

The back extension: After each set of push-ups, lie facedown on the floor, lift one arm and the opposing leg a few inches straight in the air simultaneously, and hold for a count of 10. Do the move twice on each side. Back extensions strengthen your upper and lower back muscles, thus improving posture.

I’ve never been what one would call well endowed, but when I was in my 20s, my 34Bs sat regally on my chest. With the right bra I could even create cleavage. By my 30s not only had my boobs shrunk, they appeared to be sacked out on my rib cage, as if in need of a long rest.

The perfect boosting bra

Less than thrilled with your figure? The problem may be your bra, says Stacey Ellis, a bra-fit specialist for Nordstrom. You’ll get the sexiest support if you look for the following features:

A firm, solid back. Flimsy cotton and lace may not be strong enough to pull your breasts up. A bra with a wide, tightly woven back will help hoist you up in front.

Supportive cups. “If your breasts are saggy, they’ll sit in the bottom of a sheer cup,” says Ellis. Look for a bra with lined cups that are slightly firm to the touch.

Underwire. By providing extra support underneath, underwire bras give more lift than other types. But the fit is critical: “You need to be sure the wire surrounds your breast tissue and is snug (not tight) against your ribs,” says Ellis.
